Explore your own state: Low-cost getaways in Hawaii
If you live in the Hawaiian Islands and are looking to take a budget vacation outside of the normal tourist attractions, we’re here to help. Luckily, Hawaii is an absolutely breathtaking state, so there are plenty of things to see and do outside of the norm (without breaking the bank). Here are some things to check out before planning your next Hawaiian adventure.
The Redwood Trails are found inside a beautiful mountain forest of redwoods planted by the USDA Forest service 90 years ago. And there are three main trails you can take through an almost 4-mile loop through the woods. These are the trails you can take:
All of these are fairly moderate and offer amazing scenery throughout the entire hike.
Wonder on Diamond Head Mountain
Head over to witness the beauty of Waikiki’s blue waters and Honolulu’s skyline. This place is famous for being a volcanic cone. For as little as $5 per car or $1 per person, you can adventure through this up to two-hour hiking trail that offers not just scenic views, but a whole lot of island history.
Even though this is a popular tourist attraction, it’s a great place to visit or even revisit seeing as volcanoes are what made this island what it is. To this day, Natives visit the site to give respect to “Pele” the goddess of fire. Come to visit the park to learn about the ancient culture, go on guided tours, or experience Hawaiian arts and crafts first-hand.
Explore Waipio Valley Beach
This beach is a great spot to visit and it isn’t overrun with tourists. The black sand and quiet island is a great retreat from the normal life in Hawaii. There are trails to hike for the more advanced hikers looking for a new challenge as well. Makes for a great low budget statecation on the fly.
Camp out on Glass Beach
If you are looking for something a little more out of the ordinary, head over to Glass Beach in Kauai where the sand isn’t exactly what you would expect. Instead, bits of glass from bottles or other sources make up this beach. Don’t let that scare you though! It’s glass, but that doesn’t mean it’s dangerous. The glass pebbles were dumped here many years ago and have been rounded by the water over time making this one of the most unique and interesting beaches.
Rent, relax, repeat
When you are done hitting the beaches, why not head over to one of TripAdvisor’s best vacation rentals right on the beach. Sit back and relax with the sounds of the waves cracking in Hilo, a part of the islands with plenty around and little tourist attention, making it perfect for anyone on a statecation wanting to get away.
